Finding answers in the spirit world.
The Idea
Nosis is a book series that embraces lesser-known and misrepresented religions and cultures. Fighting against stereotypes, Nosis provides an honest look at the traditional practices of these belief systems.
Shamanism is a practice that involves a practitioner reaching altered states of consciousness in order to perceive and interact with what they believe to be a spirit world. They then channel these transcendental energies into this world. This first book of the Nosis series provides detailed insight into how Shamanism is practiced around the world and the importance of keeping these memories and traditions alive.

The Process:
By creating surrealist collages, I wanted to reflect the otherworldly energy and imagery that is described as being seen by shamans when they enter the spirit world. Photos were chosen over illustrations because they allowed me to use imagery of real shamans and people from shaman-practicing cultures. Also, Shamanism is so often misconstrued, trivialized, or shown facetiously. Photographs also give the collages, and therefore shamanism, the sense of legitimacy, respect, and seriousness that they deserve while also being truthful to the visual descriptions of the spirit world.
