MK-ULTRA

In the 1950’s and 60’s, the CIA attempted to control the human mind. MK-ULTRA was a CIA-sanctioned mind control program designed to combat the Soviet Union’s supposed brain-washing techniques. MK-ULTRA’s “mind control” experiments focused on behavior modification via electro-shock therapy, hypnosis, radiation, and a variety of drugs, toxins, and chemicals. These experiments were performed on volunteers, some volunteers who were coerced, and some who had no idea they were involved in the violating program.

This zine serves as an exposé to the unethical and perverted actions of the CIA as they raced to figure out a way to control the human mind.

The Idea

There is an abundance of publicly-released, original documentation from the CIA, the Red Scare, and the Soviet Union. These document are filled with scientific jargon as they attempt to vindicate their depravity and motivations for these terrible experiments. The imagery used in this zine reflects the absurdity of these experiments and the methods, such as LSD, that were applied. The use of original text from the CIA documents serve as reminders of the attempts by the CIA at legitimizing their actions as scientifically pertinent and “essential for the wellbeing” of American citizens.
