Becoming a new parent is already an intimidating experience. Parents of deaf children have the extra hurdle of learning how to raise a deaf child in a hearing society. These parents most likely will have had little to no exposure to the deaf community or American Sign Language (ASL) and have no idea where to start. Deaf children born to hearing parents frequently experience delayed language acquisition which can impact cognitive outcomes.

 The Process:

As someone with personal connections to people with hearing impairments, it has struck me in recent years how little exposure people have to the hard-of-hearing and deaf communities. When doing more research and finding out exactly how many deaf babies are born to hearing parents (over 90%!) I realized that there is a lack of resources for the parents who are thrust into the deaf community with little to no knowledge. Not only is access to ASL imperative, but parents must start signing with their babies early to avoid delayed language acquisition.
